Mirror Mirror - Graham Benyon

Mirror Mirror was recommended to me by a friend as I was struggling with my identity and self image, it has always been based in work or relationships and I want it to have a more stable foundation - I wanted my identity to be in Christ, I just wasn’t sure what that meant.

Mirror Mirror challenges us not to use the world as our mirror, telling us who we should be and what we should want but instead use God’s word as our mirror and know who we truly are in Christ. The book uses a concept called humble dignity to help establish a right self image - we are to be humble as we are made in the image of God, and we have dignity because he chose us, out of all creation to have a relationship with. This idea permeates our whole Christian walk. There is humble dignity in our achievements - we succeed but only because God enabled us to do those things. There is humble dignity in serving God - he gave us the gifts but everyone’s gift is valued.

There is humble dignity in obeying God - we’re living a life that pleases him, but we’re only able to do so because of his spirit in us. This realisation should move us away from self obsession and lead us to self forgetfulness - a life re-oriented to revolving around Christ. Loving God means a life lived in humble dignity.
