Prodigal God - Tim Keller

This is a very readable, refreshing book expounding the truth of the gospel through the parable better known as ‘The Prodigal Son”. Beginning with the dictionary definition of ‘prod-i-gal’ (recklessly extravagant; having spent everything), Keller strips back this familiar story to examine the heart of each of the characters within – not only the reckless younger brother, but his self righteous older sibling and their ridiculously generous father. The reader is challenged to identify with the brothers and feel their need for the mercy of the father.

It is rare to find a book that is challenging to the Christian and accessible to the outside seeker, but I think “The Prodigal God” achieves this – perhaps a product of its heavy reliance on Jesus original teaching.

This is a book I would encourage everyone to R&G (read and give) – whether you are feeling weak or strong, indifferent or passionate, and regardless of how familiar you are with this particular passage, it is well worth the hour or two it takes to read….and then you can confidently pass it onto someone this Christmas as a heartfelt reminder of The Father’s open arms. - by Genevieve Thompson
