Just Do Something - Kevin de Young

“What is God’s will for my life?”

Perhaps you’ve asked yourself this question as you’ve pondered where to live, which job to take, who to marry (or whether to marry at all), what to have for dinner - the list goes on. In this helpful little book (122 pages), Kevin de Young challenges how we often think and speak about God’s will, and explores the four ways the Bible uses this term. De Young reminds us that it is God’s will for us to be sanctified (1 Thess 4:3), and that this truth is at the heart of living in right relationship with God. To put it simply, “the most important decision we face is the daily decision to live for Christ and die to self”.

I found this book well-worth reading for a number of reasons:

- it was an antidote to anxiety, as I was reminded of God’s goodness and sovereignty.
- it helped me to consider how best to pray about decisions I need to make (challenging the desire to pray broad “show me your will” prayers).
- it reminded me of the combined value of community in decision-making - God has given us a collective wisdom, and we ought to rely on each other as we seek to make godly decisions.
- it explored ‘ordinary guidance and supernatural surprises’ - considering those questions many of us ask about the place of dreams, visions, etc. in decision making.

The final chapter is entitled ‘Work, wedlock and God’s will’ - containing some good thoughts on approaching job and marriage decisions.

I recommend it to you. You can purchase ‘Just Do Something’ online, or at your local Christian bookstore.
