Reaching those we know: Don’t lunch alone

22 August

Many of us at Church by the Bridge are in office jobs, and each day we face a number of choices at lunchtime:

  1. Do I eat lunch? If yes (and it's a good idea to eat lunch each day!),
  2. Do I eat lunch on my own (e.g. at my desk, or sitting in the food court)? or,
  3. Do I eat lunch with others?

Depending on the kind of day you've had, the type of work you do and your personality, lunch on your own can be necessary or very appealing.

Where possible, making space to eat lunch with your colleagues is not only a chance to get away from your desk, it's a low-key way to get to know others outside of an office context, to share your life with them, and theirs with you.

When I was working back in Canberra, I'd regularly eat lunch with my colleagues. We'd head across the road for a chicken snitzel sub, sit in the sun, and talk about anything and everything. Out of the office, you don't have to talk about work, and you learn a lot about your colleagues as you spend this informal time with them. They will also learn a lot about you - your life, your priorities and what makes you tick.

You don't need to put any pressure on yourself to share the gospel over a sandwich (though, if the situation presents itself...!). But you'll be surprised at the opportunities that will exist to share what's most important to you, and to speak hope and truth into the lives of the people you work with.

It's relationship-building over a sandwich. And it's another simple way to reach those you know.
